Snapchat is an image sharing social media service. Images or video clips taken with Snapchat can be edited using filters, effects and drawings. Filters include face transformation, that uses facial recognition technology to disfigure faces or put on character masks, background filters and animation filters such as, falling snow. Snapchat constantly encourage people to express themselves, live in the moment, and have fun together on camera.
Over the last 75 years, numerous theorists and researchers have proved that pretend play - imagining oneself as a certain character or to be in a certain situation - has great influence on children’s social development. Through pretend play, they naturally build their language ability and improve their communication skills and problem-solving skills. By experiencing different roles and sharing their perspectives, children learn empathy and self-control. Furthermore, as pretend play involves imagination, they often demonstrate brilliant creativity. According to research, children are able to expand pretend play further if parents regularly read stories to children.
Snapchat filters enhance virtual experiences. What if these filters are combined with the imagination of fairy tales? Rather than just imagining the story of a fairy tale, children can actually become the character of the tale and encounter the story vividly, with Snapchat’s new application .
Whenever a child wants to read a story, just select a fairy tale from the application. Camera is rolled, and the selected story plays with the subtitle that appears at the bottom of the screen. When a character in the fairytale appears, Snapchat automatically transforms the child's face on the screen into the character. The scene also evolves as the story progresses, and animated effects makes the child get involved into the tale effectively. The whole story is recorded as it is told, and the child can re-play the video whenever they want.

스냅챗은 사진 공유에 기반한 소셜 미디어 서비스다. 스냅챗에서 촬영한 사진이나 영상은 필터, 효과, 그림 등으로 편집이 가능하다. 필터 중에는 얼굴 인식 기능을 활용해 자신의 얼굴 형태를 변형하거나 캐릭터 가면을 써볼 수 있는 얼굴 변형 필터와 배경 필터와 눈이나 꽃잎을 내리게 하는 애니메이션 필터도 있다. 스냅챗은 사람들이 어플리케이션을 통해 자신을 표현하고, 순간을 살며, 세상을 알아가고, 모두가 즐길 수 있길 바라고 응원한다.
역할놀이, 상상놀이 등 특정 상황에 놓이거나 특정 사람이 된 자신을 가장해보는 놀이는 아이들의 사회성 발달에 매우 중요하게 작용한다. 지난 75년간, 수많은 이론가와 연구원들은 상상놀이가 아이들의 정상발달에 필수적인 요인이라는 연구결과를 선보였다. 아이들은 상상놀이를 통해 자신이 놓인 상황, 역할을 설명하며 언어 구사 능력이 형성된다. 또한 갑작스럽게 의견 충돌이 발생했을 때 상대방과 의견을 조율하면서 의사소통 능력과 문제 해결 능력이 향상된다. 여러 역할에 이입하다 보면 아이들은 스스로 상대방에게 공감하는 방법과 자기제어력을 터득하게 된다. 또한, 상상을 하는 놀이이기 때문에 더 기발한 창의력을 보이기도 한다. 조사결과에 따르면, 부모가 아이에게 이야기를 자주 읽어줄수록, 아이가 상상놀이를 더 발전시킬 가능성이 높다고 한다.
스냅챗의 필터 기능은 가상체험을 가능하게 한다. 이 기능을 동화의 상상력과 결합한다면 어떨까? 동화 속 이야기를 단지 상상하는 것뿐만 아니라, 아이가 그 이야기 속 장면으로 들어가 그 주인공이 되어보는 체험을 통해 이야기를 더 생생하게 느끼게 해주는 스냅챗의 새로운 어플리케이션 .
어플리케이션을 시작하고 아이가 읽고 싶어하는 동화를 선택하면, 스냅챗 카메라가 자동으로 켜지면서 화면 하단에는 동화 내용이 자막으로 나온다. 등장인물이 나오면 자동으로 아이 얼굴 위에 등장인물의 가면을 씌워준다. 또한 동화 내용에 따라 배경이 바뀌고 애니메이션 효과가 들어가 동화를 더 실감나게 해준다. 이야기를 다 읽으면 녹화된 영상이 저장되고 아이는 언제든지 이야기가 듣고 싶을 때 다시 영상을 찾아볼 수 있다.
