"The Virtuous Women's Utopia" is a virtual place that look back upon the memory of virtuous women and good daughters who have been objectified over the past centuries. Also it is used for a shelter of modern people who are frustrated by sexual discrimination and the invisible glass ceiling. I want to look into virtuous women’s inner side and archive their life by this branding&illustration project. It aims to correct distorted history of women and introduce their hidden story. Their life has become the other and made to justify patriarchal ideology. I wish I can reinterpret their story and visualize it in this three-dimensional place.
“2046, An experiment was started. It aimed to establish a utopia without racism, sexism, lookism, and all kinds of discrimination. A hundred of people were picked out and they had various jobs such as artists, engineers, scientists, writers, and history scholars. They moved to an small island and started to collaborate. Their first project was rewriting women’s history that are distorted for several years. They took note of the concept of ‘Virtuous woman’ invented for patriarchal ideology and studied each character’s concealed story. They chose four virtuous women and studied their life, and built "The Virtuous Women’s Utopia".

2046년, 작은 섬에 유토피아를 세우기 위한 실험이 시작되었다. 인종과 성별, 외모, 그 어떤 기준도 차별도 없는 새로운 사회를 만들기 위한 실험이었다. 역사학자, 예술가, 과학자, 공학자, 작가 등으로 다양하게 구성된 100명의 사람들이 작은 섬으로 이주했다. 이들이 시작한 첫 프로젝트는 몰이해의 대상이었던 여성사를 새로 쓰는 것이었다. 이렇게 역사를 통틀어 소외되어 왔던 세상의 절반, 여성 인물들에 대한 재평가가 시작되었다. 그들은 그중에서도 조선 시대 가부장 제도의 발명품이었던 ‘열녀’와 ‘효녀’라는 개념에 주목하였으며 당시 사회에서 여성을 억압하던 기제로 작용하던 ‘열녀’라는 프레임의 이면에 감추어진 각 인물의 입체성에 대해 고찰하기 시작했다. 이들은 네 명의 열녀와 효녀를 선출하고 연구하였으며 그들을 위한 전당을 세우게 된다.
‘열녀 유토피아’는 소외되고 파편화되어 왔던 열녀와 효녀의 인생을 기억하고 추모하는 가상의 전당이다. 일상적인 차별과 유리 천장에 부딪혀 지친 이들을 위한 쉘터이기도 하다. 가상 공간의 제작 과정과 결과물을 보여주는 일러스트레이션을 통해 열녀라는 이름 아래 타자화된 인물들의 삶을 들여다보고 기억하고자 한다. 이들에게 드리워진 편견과 왜곡을 바로 잡고 그들의 숨은 이야기를 소개하는 이야기를 만들고 싶다. 개개인이 일구어 온 인생의 결은 무시된 채 특정한 목적을 위해 타자화되고 가공되어 왔던 여성들의 삶을 재해석하여 입체적인 공간에 녹여 내고자 한다.
