Wherever the country travelled, it is a norm to taste the local food. A comforting familiarity to all Singaporeans is local fare, easily found at hawker centres sprinkled all over the island. Similar to the streetside stalls found in Korea, hawker centres were streetside stalls re-fashioned by the government in the 1950-60s out of necessity due to rapid urbanization and a greater call for hygiene standards. Imagine an open air complex with rows and rows of food stalls serving up a wide variety of local cuisine representative of the four different cultures; it is a meeting point for family and friends to come together for a hearty meal that is affordable and convenient.
Apart from the hawker food, the owners of the stall are also of different race and backgrounds. For this reason, the hawker centre is an element that represents the multicultural background of Singapore.
As a multicultural nation with a melting pot of flavors, expect your tastebuds to be tantalized by flavors from the Chinese, Malay, Indians and Eurasians!
